What to expect when booking an Icon Tasting at de Toren Private Cellar?

First of all, it was always a dream of mine to visit this winery one day. A while ago, this dream has come true. So when we had the opportunity to book a tasting, we of course wanted the full experience. And the way to get the full experience is by booking the Icon Tasing.

So what does this Icon Tasting mean? You’ll get a 1.5 hour tour, presented by one of the senior team members. (we had the winemaker, Charles), and yes we were very lucky to have him. We will talk about that later. After the tour you’ll taste:

De Toren Délicate
De Toren Z
De Toren Fusion V
De Toren Book XVII
De Toren The Black Lion
(If you are lucky) De Toren Patronus

And trust me, all of them are amazing in their own way. For some reason I liked the Black Lion the most at the day of the tasting, so I took a bottle home and yes there will be a review of that bottle soon.

As shown here on the left, Charles is giving me a tour, and is explaining where the best areas in the vineyards are situated. They call this the ‘Geile’ area, and all Dutch people will know what that means.

Charles is one of the owners of de Toren, and at the day that we visited, they were ‘mixing’ the new Book XVII blend. However, he was not satisfied yet. He told us: ‘all different components are perfect on its own, but combined it isn’t good enough yet’.

Back to the tour. First you start off in the vineyards. Then you go have a look at the tanks and the cellar. Charles spoke with so much passion about his way of working that it was almost addictive.
